Artist Statement

“I want to have an effect on this era in which human beings are so much at a loss and so in need of help.” Kathe Kollwitz, 1922


Like many artists throughout history, I find it difficult to articulate my feelings in a conventional way.  Fabric has given me my voice, allowing me to create colorful, powerful statements about the things that I love, find abhorrent, or am moved by.


I am often inspired by women in the news and women I know or imagine, and they are reflected in the strong textures, vibrant colors, and wide variety of fabric and thread that characterize my work.


Experimenting with different techniques is an integral part of my art.  I dye, paint, or print many of the fabrics I use, and often incorporate found objects, items discarded as no longer useful that find new life in my quilts.


Working in the art quilt medium allows me to express my innermost feelings about our world, the times we live in, and the human condition.  I love making my mark with needle and thread, and I, too, hope to have an effect on this, our era.

Biography


Pat Kumicich holds her City and Guilds Certificates in Patchwork and Quilting from the London Institute of Arts.  She has art quilts in private and corporate collections.  Her work has appeared in “Artists in Their Studios Naples, Florida” by Ruth Dwyer, Patchwork Glide Quilts und Textilkunst, 500 Art Quilts (Lark Books), FiberArts Magazine, Surface Design Journal, N Magazine of Naples, Quilters’ Newsletter Magazine and Fons and Porter’s For the Love of Quilting.  


Her art has evolved from traditional to contemporary focusing on social and women’s issues as well as self-portraits.  By using a variety of fabrics, threads and techniques, she creates art quilts which are easily recognized by their vibrant colors and rich textures.


Selected international and national exhibitions which have toured Kumicich’s work include “SAQA@20,” “Imagine That!:  2006 The Husqvarna Viking Gallery of Quilt Art,” “Art Takes Shape: 2005 The Husqvarna Viking Gallery of Quilt Art,” “I Remember Mama,” “Expressions: 2006 The Art Quilt,” “Sum of the Parts,” PAQA’s “Water” exhibit and “The Artful Deck.”


In 2010, Kumicich had a solo exhibit of her work at the Carl Schurz Haus, Freiburg, Germany.


Pat lives in southwest Florida with her husband, Richard.  She is also a doll maker, an avid reader, and enjoys walking on the beach.
